D, the lighting is great. I know just how hard it is to shoot interiors — judging by how the few photographers who excel at it are used all the time.

Lasker, who produces Who’s Who (page 47) - far and away our most popular department - brought his eye and expertise to the final third of our T. O. trio: the au courant offices of IDC/ARIDO (“Letter perfect,” page 31). One of the country’s most distinguished design writers arid editors (among other things, he was once the editor of this magazine), Lasker has little time for reporting these day, heading up his own successful PR and communications firm. Persuading him to take on this assignment was for me a personal coup.
For last year’s edition, I cooked up a special words-and-pictures feature for associate editor David Lasker (a man as adept with a camera as he is at the keyboard) to take on. I called it “Designers at work,” which would capture a working day in the life of a prominent design firm. First up was Toronto-based Figure3 Interior Design, and the end result pleased me so much that I regarded it as the first in a series.
When it came time to plan this year’s issue, I thought: Let’s mix it up a little. It was then I recalled the Figure3 shot I like best: creative partner Christopher Wright hunkered down in a cozy huddle area, one of his favourite spaces in the office. Eureka. I asked Lasker to capture a half-dozen of so Toronto designers where they felt most comfortable and creative. The end result is another gem, thanks to Lasker the photographer and Lasker the writer: engaging portraits of seven Toronto designers hitting the pause button during a typical working day (“On the job,” page 53).
A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to “rebrand” myself, so to speak, by replacing the illustration that graced this column with a portrait. And so I put myself in the capable hands of Canadian Interiors associate editor David Lasker, who produces our Who’s Who section. Thanks, David, for making the process - mortifying to me in the past - painless and even enjoyable. I’m feeling brand-new.
